    Curst Sons

The Curst Sons were doubtless wonderful; I couldn't tell you, gentle reader, as I stood outside Brighton Komedia, hungry, wet, reading Georges Bataille and listening to the iPod, before asking the box office for "two tickets for the Curst Sons, my good man", only to be told it's sold out.

    CILIP's RSS once more

CILIP's RSS feed now works. It looks as if there was a problem with the whole CILIP site this morning. And it validates nicely at Feed Validator, whereas mine gets the message "this feed is valid, but may cause problems for some users"
The explanation of RSS is a little superficial.

    Interesting things to read

    CILIP goes RSS

..or tries to. There's a press release sent to the lis-cilip list, but the page that's supposed to give details of the feeds gets this:
    Server Error in '/' Application.
    Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

    ALPSP alarmism

There's a slightly alarmist report in the BMJ based on views from the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers. It reports reaction to Research Councils UK's proposals (which aren't out yet: the RCUK website says "RCUK has agreed a position statement on access to and dissemination of the outputs of research funded by the Research Councils. This information was circulated to Vice-Chancellors in March, to give them an opportunity to comment before the document is finalised. RCUK expect to formally release the statement in its definitive form in mid-May 2005").
Research councils' requirements could bankrupt academic journals -- Mayor 330 (7497): 923 -- BMJ.

    London Marathon

I don't let running spill over into this blog very often, but for once I must.
I ran the London Marathon in 4 hours 32 minutes and 11 seconds, coming 17861st, 14151st among the men and 1562nd in my age group.
My BSMS colleague Claire Brooks did it in 4:16:14

Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky

i'm grateful to Nick Robinson for this:

Finally the long awaited dramatisation of Patrick Hamilton's "Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky" comes to BBC 4 in 3 parts next Tuesday (19th April), Wednesday and Thursday. In fact it's something of a Hamilton feast as a documentary exploring the life and loves of the great man is to be shown on Monday on the same channel at 8.30 pm
