    Dick Heckstall-Smith

So far I can only see this on Reuters and on a site in Dutch I don't understand, but doubtless it will appear elsewhere. Dick Heckstall-Smith has died.
I used to hear him in the early 80s at a pub on Green Lanes in Stoke Newington whose name I can't recall, where he would play a residency at the weekends. I knew of him long before that through his recorded work. He was also famously referred to in the late Jeff Nuttall's Bomb Culture

I'm Syd Hislam, English drummer, now aged 90. I played the London scene for 50 years, emigrated to California in 1981, played in the San Francisco Bay Area for 20 odd years, and have recently moved to Washington State to live near my daughter. I played several gigs with Dick Heckstall-Smith, small group jazz, must be more than 50 years ago, a great musician. I remember one number that we played, it was one of Dick's own compositions which he titled "New Home For Pussy" -- I recall that I made a personal recording of it on one of the gigs but I have no idea how the tune went after all this time. It is probably somewhere in my large collection of cassette tapes which will never be found. I have researched the title and cannot trace that it has ever been recorded professionally. In Dick's memory I would love to be reminded of this tune and if anyone else knows of the number I'd like to hear from them. Dick was a great musician and will be missed for sure.
